PRM/SPM – new molecules to combat inflammation

PRMs (Pro-Resolvin Mediators), also known as SPMs (Specialised Pro-Resolvin Mediators), are omega-3 fatty acids that are even more highly developed than the well-known EPA and DHA.

They are the precursors to resolvins, which are the signalling molecules that bring inflammation to an end. Resolvins are related to protectins and maresins. When resolvins are referred to below, this usually also includes protectins and maresins.

Since their discovery, attempts have been made to combat various types of inflammation in the body by administering PRMs, either orally or topically.

How are PRMs ‘new’?

PRMs are, of course, not ‘new’ but rather natural precursors in the process of regulating inflammatory responses in animals and humans.

What is new, however, is that fish oils containing a particularly high proportion of PRMs have emerged in recent years. These can be used for the oral administration of PRMs, a practice already in use in dietary supplements and in research.

There are already many studies in the research community focusing on these promising molecules, as you can see here on PubMed
